Abstract:
Over the past few years, there has been significant progress in the integration of technology into language education, with chatbots emerging as a promising tool for enhancing students' language learning experiences. At present, they are an important tool that continues to grow and develop. As chatbots gain popularity, it is becoming increasingly important to explore their implications for specific language contexts, such as teaching and learning a second or a foreign language. In the past two decades, educational chatbots have shown great potential for teaching languages. There are also several challenges associated with using chatbots in language learning, including technological limitations, novelty effects, and cognitive loads.
This paper examines the implications/contribution of integrating a chatbot into the teaching of a foreign language. Based on the insights from relevant studies, the research will examine the effectiveness of chatbot-supported language learning in enhancing foreign language skills. It is imperative to investigate how teachers perceive and experience chatbots as a supplemental tool. Besides examining the impact of chatbots on student motivation, engagement, and confidence in using a foreign language, this study aims to determine whether or not chatbots may facilitate autonomous learning. The results of the literature review highlight the positive aspect of artificial intelligence for learning a foreign language.
