Abstract:
Teachers need to know what methods can separate them from the ever expanding world of AI instruction. In this talk I will detail various teaching methods that I use to teach second year Japanese students who are majoring in English, using methods proven to be effective through Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) studies. These MBE techniques apply to any subject, not just English as a foreign language education (EFL). Often teachers focus on how to motivate their students, but neglect their own motivation. If you are teaching topics that bore you, then your students will follow your lead: bored. Therefore, the presentation will begin by addressing the need for the teacher to determine how to bring passion for the subject into their classrooms: passion for the subject is more effective than knowledge of the subject. Passion brings to mind emotion, which is also proven to lead to more effective learning. I will present ways that I use narrative to present personal stories that I am emotionally and passionately involved with that highlight particular teaching points. Concepts taught through narratives have a much greater retention rate than hard, cold facts. The presentation will also illustrate other MBE teaching techniques such as movement, transition, and social awareness that I use in my EFL classes. All of the mentioned techniques will be utilized during the presentation itself in a kind of meta-recursive demonstration.Keywords:
