Abstract:
Introduction:
Resident involvement with electronic medical records review has been incorporated in their patient safety and quality improvement rotation.
There has been very limited research on the impact and educational value of electronic medical review for medical residents’ individual practice.
Previous studies revealed chart audit and feedback system are associated with improvement in residents' preventive healthcare practice.
This study was designed to test the Hypothesis: Residents who are involved in medical records review for cancer screening procedures will maintain or increase their screening exam rates after their review experience.

Objective:
To determine the current rate of preventive screenings performed by residents in an ambulatory setting and to demonstrate the applicability of medical records audit as a means to improve residents’ clinical practice and their educational experience .

Intervention:
Second year Internal Medicine Residents perform medical records review to assess the number of patients who are up to date with their colon and breast cancer screening according to united state preventive task force.

Results:
Preliminary Results did not reveal an improvement in residents’ cancer screening practice post medical records review.
There was no improvement in residents’ practice with overall increase in medical knowledge of cancer screening guidelines.
There was a significant increase in percentage of male colon cancer screening post medical records review.
Small sample size and difference in patients’ population, could contribute to the inability to detect the positive effect of medical record review.
Further studies should be conducted to research the benefits of medical records review and to study the means to improve residents’ preventive healthcare practice.
