Abstract:
The robust foundation of student development theory is essential for articulating and delivering student development and support (SDS) services. Traditionally, SDS services have provided essential student assistance through direct, face-to-face interactions with trained professionals. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly shifted SDS services towards online delivery. In this new digital context, the value of human interaction persists, albeit often asynchronously.

With the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, the evolution of SDS services is imminent. This transition may reduce the exclusive reliance on human interaction. AI is poised to play a more significant role in delivering SDS services, introducing students to interactions with virtual assistants and chatbots, among others. This AI-induced transformation introduces various unforeseen ethical challenges. This paper investigates ethics' critical role in shaping SDS's future in the AI era.

In this virtual presentation, I will explore five critical themes related to the ethics of SDS services in the AI era. Firstly, I will discuss how AI tools can improve SDS delivery while addressing privacy concerns related to data collection. Then, I will probe the ethical implications of collecting, storing, and analysing student data in an AI-driven context, emphasising transparency and consent. I will also assess the potential benefits and ethical considerations of utilising AI for student engagement, seeking a balance between technology and human interaction. The presentation highlights the need to ensure AI-driven SDS services are accessible and inclusive for all students, addressing algorithmic bias challenges. Lastly, I will outline five crucial ethical principles for integrating AI into SDS.
