Abstract:
An initiative aimed at bolstering scientific and technological literacy among students in Porto's public schools fostering partnerships between elementary education institutions and higher education entities, including universities and research centers, to engage students in scientific research projects.
In the 2024/2025 academic year, a collaborative project was undertaken involving two teachers and six students from 9th grade at a school in Porto, in partnership with the ESE - Polytechnic of Porto researchers. The primary objective was to immerse students in the research process, enhancing their understanding of scientific methodologies and promoting critical thinking.
The project commenced with workshops led by ESE - Polytechnic of Porto researchers, introducing students to fundamental concepts in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Subsequently, students identified specific research questions related to the application of these technologies in healthcare. Under the mentorship of their teachers and ESE - Polytechnic of Porto researchers, they collected and analyzed data, culminating in the development of a predictive model for outcomes based on historical health data.
This hands-on experience allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems, deepening their comprehension of complex subjects. Moreover, it fostered collaboration, problem-solving, and analytical skills essential for navigating the evolving technological landscape.
The project exemplifies the efficacy of collaborative educational models in promoting scientific and technological literacy. By bridging the gap between secondary and higher education, this initiative provides students with invaluable exposure to academic research environments, fostering a culture of research and lifelong learning. The success of this effort underscores the importance of community partnerships in enhancing educational outcomes and preparing students for future academic and professional endeavors. Keywords:
