CURRICULAR STRUCTURE AND ERASMUS+ MOBILITY PROGRAMMES (KA131 AND KA107): A SUBJECT-LEVEL ANALYSIS OF STUDENT CHOICES IN THE BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN COMPUTER ENGINEERING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALMERÍA (2020–2025)

Abstract:
This paper presents a quantitative analysis of the academic subjects from the Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering Erasmus mobility programmes over the five most recent academic years (2020–2025) in the University of Almeria (Spain). The study is based on institutional Erasmus records combined with official degree information, allowing each subject to be characterised by academic year, course level, number of credits, and curricular status (compulsory or optional). The analysis focuses exclusively on subjects formally included in the degree programme, ensuring consistency and comparability across the entire period. A longitudinal descriptive methodology was employed. For each academic year, the total number of Erasmus subject selections was computed and disaggregated by course level and subject type. In addition, subject-level frequencies were analysed to identify those with the highest and lowest participation rates across the five-year period, enabling the detection of concentration patterns and marginal participation. Results show that a total of 544 Erasmus subject selections were recorded between 2020 and 2025. The annual distribution reveals moderate interannual variability, with 92 selections in 2020–21, 69 in 2021–22, 136 in 2022–23, 139 in 2023–24, and 108 in 2024–25. From a curricular perspective, Erasmus participation is strongly concentrated in upper-level courses: third-year subjects account for 224 selections, followed by second-year (141) and fourth-year (127) subjects, while first-year subjects are comparatively underrepresented. The analysis confirms a clear predominance of optional subjects in Erasmus mobility, whereas compulsory subjects show limited participation across all academic years. At the subject level, a strong asymmetry is observed: a small number of subjects concentrates a large share of Erasmus cases, while many subjects appear only sporadically or not at all. In particular, Digital Image Processing emerges as the most frequently selected subject, with 40 Erasmus cases over the analysed period. The results indicate that Erasmus subject selection is driven primarily by curricular flexibility and course level. These findings highlight the influence of degree structure on international mobility patterns and provide evidence-based insights to support curriculum design, academic advising, and internationalisation strategies aimed at fostering academically balanced Erasmus pathways.Keywords:
