Abstract:
Representing three-dimensional objects in two dimensions in a drawing sheet implies a lot of knowledge and study of the drawing standards in the field of graphic engineering. Learning the graphic standards involves memorizing a large number of representations of standard elements in mechanical assemblies such as bearings, screws, nuts, bolts etc, in these elements normalized representation does not match the real representation.

In order to increase motivation in the classroom and improve learning at the industrial drawing course it has been made a series of creative activities using the competitive analysis as a means of learning the standards in industrial drawing. It has been combined standard type activities with closed statements, with innovative activities based on the creation of new industrial designs using techniques of competitive analysis in product design.

It has been made available to students a set of mechanical assemblies of the same product but made by different manufacturers. The selected product incorporates standard parts such as screws, nuts but at the same time, allows perform a new creative design at the level of form and function. Taking these designs as their competence, freshmen students of Engineering Degree must perform in teams, a new creative product design in CAD (3D modeling) and get 2D drawing sheets. This creative design should incorporate standard parts that should be represented in the drawing sheets. To carry out the new designs, students must take data from their competence, dimensions, shapes etc., as well as a complete analysis identifying their competitors on web. Finally students must submit a dossier with the drawing sheets and a report with the analysis of competition including strong and weak points and present in class their new solution to the rest of their teammates.

The quality of designs performed as well as the level of creativity and innovation, shows an increased motivation for learning standardization. It has been increased the attendance to classes throughout the semester, in comparison with previous years. The freshmen who have done these creative activities have improved the ability of teamwork as well as skills related to spatial vision and abstract thinking and the ability to render 3D objects in two dimensions towards their professional future as engineers.
