Abstract:

The conference contribution is dedicated to the possibility of using artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT to analyze textbooks and compare them. In the Czech Republic, it is possible to use textbooks that are approved by the Ministry of Education. There are several of these textbooks, published by different publishers. It is sometimes difficult for teachers to choose a textbook that would best suit their teaching style and the needs of their students. So the question is whether it is possible to use ChatGPT to select a textbook. The topic of redox reactions was analyzed in two textbooks. A textbook called GSCE AQA Chemistry Complete Revision & Practice is used to teach chemistry to pupils in the 14-16 age group in Great Britain. The textbook entitled Chemistry 9 - introduction to general and organic chemistry is used for the same age group in the Czech Republic. Using ChatGPT, the content of textbooks was examined from several aspects, we focused on the occurrence of chemical reactions, chemical experiments, the interdisciplinary scope of the text, and the connection to everyday life. ChatGPT analyzed both textbooks fairly accurately, was able to extract specific chemical equations, description of experiments and examples of redox reactions used in everyday life. On the other hand, there were inaccuracies, such as the omission of some relationships, a wrong estimate of the difficulty of the text, etc. From a mutual comparison of the textbooks, it follows that the textbook used in the Czech Republic has a more academic style, describes theoretical principles, but on the other hand pays a lot of attention to laboratory practice. The textbook used in Great Britain is more informal in nature, emphasizing practical aspects and introducing mnemonics for remembering. ChatGPT can be used to analyze textbooks, but this use has its limitations, careful supervision by the teacher is necessary.
