Abstract:
The use of audiovisual materials has become a key tool in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL), especially for young learners. These resources provide students with exposure to a wide range of accents, cultural contexts, and communicative situations, helping them develop their linguistic skills and cultural awareness. Materials that simulate real-life scenarios are particularly effective, as they create engaging and meaningful opportunities to practice communication. However, the increased use of screens at early ages raises concerns about their potential negative impact on learners’ cognitive and emotional development.
This presentation explores both the benefits and the risks of using audiovisual materials in EFL education. It includes a review of existing research on their effectiveness in improving communicative competence and cultural understanding. Additionally, it presents a qualitative analysis of an audiovisual resource designed to introduce cultural content into EFL classrooms, showing how it can help learners connect language learning with cultural knowledge. The findings highlight the value of audiovisual materials as powerful tools for language education. They expose learners to authentic communicative contexts and encourage the development of key skills, particularly in understanding cultural differences. At the same time, the study emphasizes the importance of regulating screen use to protect learners’ health and well-being, especially in early childhood. Excessive screen exposure can lead to issues such as reduced attention span and limited opportunities for face-to-face interaction.
In conclusion, audiovisual materials should be used thoughtfully in EFL classrooms, balancing their educational benefits with the need to minimize potential risks. By carefully selecting content and managing screen time, educators can create effective learning environments that support both linguistic competence and overall development. Keywords:
