Abstract:
The basic idea of Stylistics is that a certain choice of stylistic devices determines the effect on the target recipient of the text and strives to understand what possibilities exist in a given language and how particular choices are made. That is why Stylistics is interdisciplinary and is so important as an integral part of education process not only for those who specialise in Literature, but for those students who study Public Relations, Journalism, Rhetoric - subjects in which the relation between style and effect is preassigned, so that they are well pre-armed with analytical tools which contributes to better understanding of the stylistic mechanisms for getting the message out. It also plays a great educational in the teaching of students learning English as a second language, especially those who associate their future careers with Translation.
The paper aimed to study an individual writing style with respect to grammatical patterns and was specifically dedicated to characteristics of grammatical stylistics of J. R. Rowling’s novels, the main object of the study being participial constructions. The material for the study was obtained by continuous sampling from three novels by Rowling (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets и Casual Vacancy). The comparative analysis was based on the texts of the novels written by twelve contemporary English speaking authors (J. Coe, G. Swift , P. Pullman, C. S. Lewis, H. Fielding, C. Palahniuk, L. Weisberger, N. Hornby, M. Huneven, S. Meyer and B. Delinsky) and carried out by means of statistical methods. The total analysed sample comprised 758 examples of Absolute Participial Constructions from more than 2500 pages of texts.
The statistics testify that all three novels by the author in question exhibit much higher (3.55 times higher) frequency of occurrence of the studied constructions in the text by Rowling than in those used for comparison analysis.
The findings manifested that the use of Absolute Participial Constructions is stated to be distinctive and intrinsic feature of the author’s writing style irrelevant to genres of her novels and might be used as a relevant characteristic for text authorship attribution. Also, the results can be a contribution to lectures and seminars on Stylistics of English as well as used in practical classes in English and Literary Translation. Keywords:
