Abstract:
This communication presents the EMMA 5D’s MOOC framework intended to inform stakeholders about the different aspects relevant to MOOC creation and delivery. By identifying 5 steps for MOOC implementation (Decide; Design; Develop; Delivery; and Document), the framework proposes a set of questions and illustrative examples organized according to three complementary perspectives: institutional, pedagogical and technical.

The EMMA 5D’s MOOC framework integrates the EMMA European project distinctive experience on cultural and linguistic diversity, and on learner experience on the basis of learning analytics and survey data. It is based on a comparative literature review on MOOC related classification schemes and frameworks.

This framework is as a customizable tool regarding three interrelated points of view:
• Institutional, assisting senior level-stakeholders and decision makers in the discussion about the adoption of MOOCs as a strategy, including administrative and logistic issues.
• Pedagogical, providing teachers, professors and educational designers with MOOC design and facilitation guidelines.
• Technical, orienting technologists and developers on the implementation and integration of the learning environment.

Each step of the framework deploys a set of key aspects together with a list of guiding questions according to the three framework perspectives; it also provides examples from the EMMA experience and other MOOC initiatives.

1. Decide: The first step consists on stablishing the MOOC overall purpose and scope. It deals, among other aspects, with legal issues, logistics, technology infrastructure, and cultural and linguistic diversity.
2. Design: this step highlights decisions regarding the planning of the MOOC addressing topics such as expected learner profiles, course content and structure, assessment, interaction and facilitation.
3. Develop: in this step the focus is put on the production of learning materials and the integration of all media content and services into the MOOC delivery platform, e.g. videos, simulations, quizzes, social tools, translation and transcription processes, etc.
4. Deliver: this step addresses learner facilitation and peer-to-peer support, technical assistance for teachers and learners as well as the continued monitoring of the MOOC.
5. Document: this step covers the process of documenting and reflecting on the decisions that have been taken in relation to the MOOC from start to end focusing on quality assurance and improvement.

This contribution is part of the initiatives of the European Multiple MOOC Aggregator (EMMA for Short), a European CIP Funded Project (www.europeanmoocs.eu).
