Abstract:
In this paper we look at the Biological Sciences’ curriculum imperatives as enshrined in the South African Higher Education legislative and policy framework. In pursuance of this objective some of the documents we are interrogating are the Higher Education Act, the White Paper 3, the New Academic Policy, The National Qualification Framework, The Higher Education Qualification Framework and The White Paper on Science and Technology, among others. Our aim being to determine the extent to which these documents proscribe, describe and create conducive sustainable and empowering learning environments for both students and lecturers of Biological Sciences. Although the international legislative and policy directives will also be considered in the paper, the focus will be on locating practices of curriculum and the role of the Biological sciences lecturer at Mafikeng campus of the North West University.
