Abstract:
The present study aimed to assess, among older adults, digital competencies for empowerment based on the CompDig60+ model. Digital technologies (DT) are increasingly becoming part of older adults’ daily lives, requiring them to communicate, create content, and share information on social networks. The development of a competency model contributes to a better understanding of older adults’ needs in the use of digital technologies. For this reason, the CompDig60+ model was created, comprising nine digital competencies considered relevant to various aspects of older adults’ everyday lives. The methodology of this research was characterized as qualitative, with a practical-theoretical and interpretative approach. The target population consisted of individuals aged 60 years and older. Data were collected through an online questionnaire. A total of 109 participants over the age of 60 took part in the study and highlighted the importance of using digital technologies. However, it was observed that competencies requiring critical thinking, such as digital health literacy, are still underdeveloped among older adults. Therefore, a lack of knowledge was identified regarding how to select and critically analyze information from the digital environment. It is essential to create opportunities that foster the development of digital competencies among individuals aged 60 and over in order to promote their empowerment. The study proved relevant by providing, through an assessment instrument, a theoretical-practical framework for the development of digital competencies that enable the empowerment and social inclusion of older adults.
