Abstract:
Computer-based modelling tools allow students to try their own theories in a way that is easily tested by comparison with physical known results.

An alternative is to implement this type of modelling in spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel, Open Office CALC, Google SHEETS. This type of software has the limitation of being visually less appealing when compared with others developed specifically for simulations, such as STELLA, MODELLUS, or STARLOGO, but on the other hand its implementation does not require prior knowledge of a programming language, or about complex mathematical software, which would be an obstacle to the learning in itself. Also the learning of the use of this computer tool can be an added value for the personal and professional development of the students involved.

This article presents an experience of application of development of simulations in a discipline of Biophysics. The simulators to be implemented by the students are related to the mechanics of breathing, the blood circulation and the propagation of nerve impulses. All simulations were completely developed in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.

At the end of each of the four activities, a questionnaire was used to measure the progression of motivation during the semester, with a final questionnaire regarding the set of activities developed. From the results of these questionnaires we can see that there is a very slight positive progression in the perception of the importance of the topics covered, and in the methodology used.
