Abstract:

English for special purpose comes into being with the formation and the specialization of the English of science and technology (EST). As a component of the EST, English for electrical power industry shares its main features. Characterized by an objective, solemn and precise style, nominalization is regarded as one of the most prominent features and is employed in great amount in EST.

Nominalization meets requirements of technical writing. At the same time, it brings a lot of challenges to the translators, because the nominalized part in English can hardly be adopted by Chinese without any transposition. The difficulty in translation may lead to some misunderstandings of the meaning. However, the misunderstandings of the meaning of the nominalization will dramatically weaken the informational function of science and technology texts. Therefore, what we should do in the translation of EST, English for electrical power industry here, is to represent the objective fact described in the nominalization and translate it into Chinese clearly and smoothly.

With the analysis of the difficulties in the application which confuse the translators, and of the features of the nominalization, the paper focuses on the summary of the criteria, general process and translation strategies in the English-Chinese translation in power industry. To improve the quality of the translation, it is necessary to analyze some sample sentences.
