Abstract:
Development of the global knowledge-based economy and the highly competitive environment for the development of modern technologies place increasing demands on universities for the education system and the preparation of future graduates for the performance of their profession. Ensuring a qualified workforce for increasing the competitiveness and sustainable economic growth of the country is a challenge not only for Slovakia but for all countries of the world.

Faculty of Security Engineering, University of Zilina (FSE UNIZA) has a special interest in education being based on information and research results and in an environment surrounded by research. The goal of such an approach is that knowledge from research reaches individual educational activities and students are enabled, on the one hand, to understand the meaning and essence of scientific research activity at the University, but they are also given the opportunity to participate in research at the Faculty and become part of the research community.

The aim of the paper is to present the goals and outputs of two currently solved projects at the FSE UNIZA aimed at developing new and innovative skills for life and business which are not included in the compulsory curricula of university studies and supporting the internalization of education. It concerns the European project titled „ICT-SKILLS" solved within the Erasmus+ program, Key action 2: Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices, and the domestic project Innovation and internationalization of teaching as a tool for increasing the quality of education at the FSE UNIZA, financed by the Cultural and educational grant agency of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic.

The paper also presents other FSE UNIZA activities aimed at increasing the quality of teaching and educational innovation, such as the addition and improvement of specialized classrooms and laboratories and the monitoring of education quality indicators.
