Nowadays rapidly developing information-oriented society requires highly-qualified computer science teachers. According to the Federal Educational Standard of Secondary education based on system- and activity-based approach it is necessary to develop personal, metadisciplinary and disciplinary competencies. As a result, there comes a necessity to effectively structure the process of pre-service teacher education using a variety of educational approaches and techniques. The article describes the experience of pre-service teachers’ training in terms of “Methodology of teaching computer science and information technology (IT)” course at Kazan Federal University.

The following aspects should be taken into consideration when designing the course: the level of pre-service teachers’ IT competencies, “Computer science and IT” school course content, types of lessons (according to the Federal Educational Standard), appropriate tasks and course assessment. The “Methodology of teaching computer science and IT” course is aimed at developing multipurpose, general-professional and professional competencies of pre-service IT teachers.

Pre-service teachers had numerous collaborative project-based activities in order to study “Computer science and IT” course content, to analyze IT textbooks, sanitary requirements for secondary schools and various types of lessons as well as to analyze and design lesson plans. They also had individual projects that included designing “Computer science and IT” lesson plans for 7-9 grades and conducting lessons. The designed lesson plans and the lessons taught were analyzed in small groups from the point of view of the chosen project theme. The survey showed that having studied “Methodology of teaching computer science and IT” course pre-service teachers acquired the following skills: theoretical and practical skills required for teaching computer science and IT to school children; skills required for using IT in teaching.
