Abstract:
In the last two years, we have had a significant increase in remote teaching due the need for isolation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, that, even though this being an old education modality, it's still little used in Brazil. The Federal Institute of Amazonas (IFAM), located in Brazil in city of Manaus, had to reinvent itself to encourage students to embrace this new reality. This article exposes an experience of using the teaching technique through remote "bootcamp", in which we use the same idea of the teaching used in technological fairs, however, here, will be reported an experience to application of this technique in remotely. For this, the bootcamp method was applied in the course of mobile software development, offered by the Federal Institute of Amazonas - Campus Manaus Industrial District (IFAM-CMDI) to engineering students (ECAT). The course started with the basic theoretical classes, but in the second class teams were formed and the bootcamp rules began to be applied, the aim was to present a simple but functional project that could be executed on a real mobile device. The teacher in charge collected the apps and in the next class commented on the positive and negative points with the students. During the course, several challenges were proposed in different types of contexts where there was an increase in student engagement, and even an increase in the class, which started with 20 students and ended with 29 students. Throughout the process, the constant dialogue between teacher and students was essential for students to feel like they were in a bootcamp, so the teacher shared ideas daily and was always available to students via messaging apps to make the environment as close as possible to a bootcamp. At the course end, a questionnaire was sent to students asking about education system used, and the results showed that students felt motivated and satisfied with the activities developed during the course. All steps used during the course will be showed in this paper.
