Abstract:
College entrance exam scores are a predictor of academic performance. In most STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) degrees, the entrance score is low, which may be correlated with low student performance. In this work we analyzed the entry profiles of students in the degrees of Electrical Engineering and Industrial and Automatic Electronic Engineering of the University of A Coruña. Specifically, a total of 6 academic years were analyzed (2014/2015 to 2019/2020), which encompassed 244 records. The grades of the entrance exams were disaggregated by subjects (general phase and specific phase). The general phase is composed of five subjects: Spanish Language, Galician Language, History of Spain/History of Philosophy, English and Mathematics. In the specific phase, the results in three subjects were analyzed: Physics, Chemistry and Technical Drawing. Finally, the average grade in the general phase and the average grade for access to the University were analyzed. The results showed that a high percentage of students were not evaluated in the entrance exams for STEAM subjects, coming from profiles oriented more to careers in the social or health fields.
