Abstract:
According to the Pisa report, Spain scores in one of the last positions in certain core subjects such as mathematics. This fact directly affects quantitative degree subjects, which are often a major stumbling block for both teachers and students. This is the case for the course "Statistics", part of the curriculum of the first degree course in Tourism at the University of Valencia.

Given that the mentioned subject is taught in the second quarter, we have carried out a study of the perception that students have of the subjects studied in the first quarter as well as its level in knowledge of quantitative. The objective of the analysis has focused on detecting gaps and factors that may be influential in the assimilation of the subject, thus obtaining the information needed to approach more attractive and effective ways of imparting it.

The first results show a low pre-university level of quantitative skills, as well as a perception from a large part of the students that matters of this nature are not relevant to their future professional development.

Both for the study and for subsequent monitoring of students’ performance we used an electronic voting system (EVS), which has been combined with video tutorials to achieve not only a deeper understanding but also an increased interest and higher attendance rates.
