Abstract:
The Unit of Technology (UAT) of UNAM is situated in the Bajio region of Mexico, which is one of the most dynamic areas of the country in terms of R&D centers, car manufacturing and auto-parts companies. The automotive sector is one of Mexico’s most important industries, comprising 3.5 percent of the nation’s GDP and employing over one million people nationwide. Mexico could become world’s fourth-largest producer of auto parts by 2023.

Throughout the country there exists 23 programs that offer the bachelor’s degree in automotive engineering. These university engineering programs are well established and have been successful so far but, based on current technological innovations that are taking place in the industry and the accelerated growth of electric, hybrid and fuel-cell vehicle architectures, it is clear the need to update some the above-mentioned engineering curricular programs. The authors of this paper report on the UAT’s experiences and challenges concerned with the design of an academic e-Mobility engineering program. The authors investigate the skills and learning environments required to strengthen current engineering training courses.
