Abstract:
H5P is a free and open-source software used to create interactive and multimedia-rich learning materials that promote active and autonomous learning. While active learning refers to didactic activities that actively engage the student in the learning process, rather than passively receiving information, autonomous learning promotes that the student becomes self-directed and self-motivated. Both approaches are commonly related to important benefits for learning that include, but are not limited to, increased engagement, better understanding, improved problem-solving skills, increased motivation and satisfactory personalized learning.

Based on these ideas, the objective of this study is to empirically analyse the effectiveness of H5P activities in enhancing student satisfaction and learning outcomes in the context of business management and economy studies at the university level. For this purpose, the study uses a quantitative approach based on data collected from a sample of 412 undergraduate students enrolled in different courses of the business administration and management degree of the University of Cantabria (Spain). After finalising the courses, the students were asked to fill in a questionnaire to determine their satisfaction and learning perception over the course, as well as their satisfaction with and learning perception of the H5P activities. Data was processed using structural equation modelling (SEM) to test a causal model that determined the relationships that are established between H5P activities and satisfaction and learning outcomes over the course.

The findings show that students find H5P activities highly engaging, enjoyable and satisfactory. Using a control group of students who did not participate in the H5P activities, the findings also report that these activities significantly and positively contribute to students’ satisfaction with the course as well as their subjective and objective learning outcomes. Overall, this study highlights the potential of H5P activities as an effective tool for university education in the context of business management and economy studies. Educators can use H5P to create interactive and engaging materials that cater to diverse learning styles and enhance students’ learning experiences. Nevertheless, further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of using H5P activities on student academic achievement.
