Abstract:
While the use of music is common in accompanying many sports routines and dance, there are many similarities in both entities that need to be recognized. Music is often used simply as background music or sound which defeats the actual purpose and ignores the effect of the combination of both subjects. In the field of music and movement, both formal and semantic congruence are available, which has been studied rather extensively. This study emphasizes that there is scientific and philosophical evidence to demonstrate the similarities between music and movement. The research methods include comparative analysis of literature from the fields of movement and music. A systematic review of data from experiments and surveys reveals that increased congruence between subjects enhances perceived qualities in execution, dynamic elements, and technical value. The study’s outcome identifies the specific elements contributing to congruence between music and sports routines. Additionally, respondents with a background in music training were better able to recognize and understand perceived congruence. Hence, the study’s outcome highlights the importance of understanding and recognizing formal and semantic congruence between music and movement in sports routines, emphasizing its potential broader application in physical education.
