Abstract:
The use of music is compulsory in many competitions or performance of many sports routines. While many different aspects of the relationship between music and sports, ranging from the scientific aspects of ergogenic components to enhancing the motivation and endurance in athletes, have been studied in depth, a more subjective interpretation lies in the relationship between music and those sports with a routine or choreography. This paper highlights the importance of learning fundamental musical elements that could transform the visual perception of energy and stamina in sports routines. The study reports an experiment and survey of a rhythmic gymnastics routine, looking at how musical elements transformed the visual perception of sports qualities. Using the same video of the routine, new music was composed with more musical elements selected to match the movements of the athlete. Respondents were asked to compare the video with the original music and the one with new music. The result shows that perception of both energy and stamina are significantly higher in the video with modified music. This suggests that musical understanding and education is important for athletes in these sports categories, as the use of music affects the qualities of a performance.
