IDENTITY AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF NOVICE TEACHERS: KEYS FOR TRAINING
The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is aware of the responsibility that currently falls on novice teachers, and, consequently, of the need to address specifically their training needs. Training becomes a basic resource for their professional development as teachers at the University. Hasiberriak is the program that aims to train novice teachers in the construction of their professional identity as teachers of the UPV/EHU and to consolidate the institutional development, contributing essentially to the strategic line of promoting the IKD framework of teaching and learning.
This communication sets out the key lines that make up the formative process and methodological and organizational development of the Hasiberriak program. It also displays the results of the evaluation of the process carried out with the first group of teachers. Qualitative analysis has been carried out from the stories of life, professional learning projects, individual interviews and portfolios. A triangulation of the testimonies has been made in order to assess their density and consistency. And finally a system of categories that has contributed to the discussion and interpretation of the results has been constructed.
The findings confirm the effectiveness of the training strategy in the creation of deeper reflexive processes and in the configuration of a university teacher identity in the novice teaching staff. Identity becomes the history of personal and professional life, is articulated with the current learning, acquires relief and sense with the educational model of the University and is projected towards new achievements of professional development. From this perspective the work of thoughtful analysis of the IKD educational model appears as an essential element in the generation of the identity traits of each teacher.
