Abstract:
Digitalization has become an urgent priority in the education sector. However, many institutions struggle to implement technology-driven changes effectively. This research applies Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model as a guiding framework for the digital transformation of German schools. This study aims to explore how Kotter’s model can facilitate a structured and participatory digital transformation process in schools. Based on qualitative methodology, this research gathers survey data from the teachers, students and parents in several German schools to obtain diverse stakeholder perspectives on this transformation process. The findings of the study indicate that a strong sense of urgency for digital transformation and forming and communicating a vision accordingly can enhance the chance of stakeholder participation. Participants of the survey emphasized the need for strong leadership support and a collaborative guiding coalition with a spokesperson from all stakeholder categories. Continuous training and support help the teachers to be up to date with the technological change for pedagogy and parents' concerns related to misuse of the technology, while early success in the classroom proves critical for sustainability and motivation. However, challenges are identified in consolidating gains and anchoring new practices in school culture, suggesting the need for prolonged effort beyond initial implementation. This research provides empirical evidence that Kotter’s guidelines for organizational change can be effectively adapted for the educational sector. It offers actionable insights and recommendations for school leaders and policymakers to the broader discourse on change management and digitalization in education.
