Abstract:
When one examines EU policy documents, one notices that while improving the quality of teacher education can be identified as a priority for the European Commission (”Ministers of Education agreed in 2007 to give high priority to sustaining and improving the quality of teacher education. They gave high priority to ensuring that provision for teachers' initial education, early career support (induction) and further professional development is coordinated, coherent, adequately resourced and quality assured.” ), the same is not equally true for stepping up the attractiveness of the teaching career and attracting valuable candidates to training programs for careers in education.
However, the topic can be found in policy documents of other international organizations, like OCDE.
This paper analyses current situations and trends related to the attractiveness of teaching career, argues on the need for developing consistent national and European policies, and suggests key issues for such policies.
The paper also aims to attract interested academic and institutional partners towards a project to set up a research and career support institute for the education sector, in order to inform the development of policies and to identify and disseminate best practices in the area. Keywords:
Education policy, Teaching career attractiveness, Teaching quality.
