Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study is to determine whether the Learning by Developing (LbD) pedagogical model is a suitable learning method for computer science students. This study reports on the pilot implementation of LbD at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Finland as part of a project-based module in the autumn semester of 2021-22. It is essential to develop students' working life skills during their studies in higher education today. In the LbD action model, competence development is an entity that includes research, authenticity, partnership, experience and creativity. Authenticity refers to a genuine work-life context that helps students develop their work-life skills already during their studies. The importance and value of lifelong learning are also part of the LbD pedagogy.

Students' experiences of LbD have been analysed through a self-assessment study conducted for them. This article presents the results of students' competence development based on a self-assessment survey. In addition, this paper presents the results of narrative analyses carried out in interviews with stakeholders (lecturers and project clients).

The research has been carried out using an action research approach and mainly collected qualitative data. The study has gathered information based on the experiences of students, lecturers and project clients. The research material is based on empirical data and is intended to be used to change teaching practices in the future. The necessary changes and improvements will be made to the LbD action model based on the results reported in this paper. It will be further developed to best support the development of students' competencies and the planning, implementation and management of lecturers' work. In addition, the revamped LbD action model should better account for the customers' understanding of development-based learning and their role in it.

Among two earlier research cycles in other universities in Finland and the UK, this study aims to identify potential areas for development that should be considered in the further development of LbD and the development of a new practical guide. One study aims to produce a revised LbD guide that includes practical guidance and advice for students and lecturers on using the LbD approach to teaching and learning. In addition, it is intended to include instructions and advice for representatives of working life in connection with participation in the LbD study module.
