Abstract:
This paper shows an experience carried out at the University of Burgos where several mobile applications have been used to facilitate the continuous evaluation of students.
As a prerequisite for their selection, it was proposed that the Apps work in the main browsers and operating systems of mobile phones, tablets, laptops, or desktop computers. In addition, Apps that did not require prior registration were selected. Socrative, Kahoot, and Quizizz applications were used in this specific case.
In general, these tools allow more active participation of the student, facilitate their motivation, and allow automatic and, if the teacher selects it, also immediate feedback.
In addition to the regular use for evaluating the knowledge learned by the student and computing it in the final grade, they have been used in other situations:
- For the initial or previous evaluation to find out what prior or base knowledge students have.
- For students' self-assessments in class or at home (even if they are not considered for the overall mark).
- To carry out co-assessments allowing students to evaluate projects or presentations made by other classmates. Thus, the teacher has extra information that can help him to evaluate the work or presentations.
- For teacher self-assessment. For example, the teacher will be able to see if the just explained topics have been understood by the students or if, on the contrary, certain aspects need reinforcement in later classes.
Finally, additional options offered by these applications will be presented. For example, we can set up games and competitions that traditional quizzes do not offer. The introduction of games/competitions in classes is another resource that the teacher can consider not only to evaluate but also to reinforce and review the knowledge acquired by the student.
These tools offer another alternative to the traditional teacher-student unidirectional learning model, improve interactivity in classes significantly and simultaneously increase the interest of students. Keywords:
