Abstract:
Many authors who publish in the field of life and health protection claim that not a single subject in elementary or high school is devoted to the issue of life and health protection at a sufficient level. It follows that education in this area in schools is at a very poor level. A special organizational form in the third year of high schools is the life and health protection course, which is the culmination of the process of education and training in the mentioned area. The content of the curriculum is mainly oriented towards the population being able to deal with situations caused by industrial and ecological accidents, traffic accidents, and natural disasters. The purpose of our research was to clarify the impact of the Life and Health Protection Course on the theoretical knowledge of the given issue of 3rd grade high school students. The experimental factor was the intervention lecture and the life and health protection course itself. The research groups consisted of 50 students of the third year of the gymnasium and 50 of the vocational high school in Prešov. Probands completed a pretest and a posttest focused on knowledge in the field of life and health protection within the framework of the state education program for the given level of study, ISCED 3. We evaluated, compared and interpreted the achieved test results. Based on the analysis of the results, we conclude that the lecture and the course itself had a positive impact on knowledge that reached a sufficient level in the area of life and health protection. We conclude that Life and Health Protection Courses are crucial for students' acquisition of knowledge in the researched area. The level of practical skills in the field of civil protection and first aid remains questionable.
