Abstract:
E-portfolios have been used to assess generic skills in schools and teacher education institutions. The use of e-portfolio has changed the way we assess students in schools and in teacher education programmes. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the potentiality of e-portfolio as an assessment platform in teacher education. The Sultan Idris University of Education has developed a system to allow students and lecturers to communicate in a variety of sessions including supervisory sessions, teaching and learning sessions. This paper discusses how e-portfolios and its elements such as reflective statements, learning and teaching philosophy and rubrics support self-assessment among preservice teachers. An initial study of 73 students who responded to the questionnaire indicated that the students agreed that e-portfolio has helped them to record what they have learnt and accomplished during the semester. The students also agreed that e-portfolio can be used as self-assessment tool and their soft skills have improved through the use of e-portfolio. Rubrics are also been used to evaluate student’s artifacts and reflections. Students viewed rubrics in e-portfolio as an indicators of what they are expecting to perform in the assessment task given to them. However, to be more effective, students suggested that a proper exposure and training are needed on the use of e-portfolio as an assessment tools.
