Abstract:
Sustainable economic growth and development in modern research is associated with a knowledge-based economy and the spread of innovation, and this is not possible in a without creating a high-quality educational environment that forms human capital - the basis of the competitive advantages of the national economy.

It is important to note that Russia's economic growth and the educational system are very closely related. The quality of education affects the quality of work of future specialists, and, therefore, the country's economy. Therefore, this issue is currently very relevant and requires an analysis of the educational sphere.

We focus our analysis on investigation of the relationship between qualitative and quantitative indicators of the higher education system and regional development. In addition, the article presents the problem of fictitious human capital. Regions of the Russian Federation were chosen as an object of the investigation. We traced the connection between economic variables and educational economic using correlation and econometric analysis.

The following hypotheses are tested during the study. Firstly, the number of universities has a positive effect on the development of the region. Secondly, the qualitative characteristics of educational institutions affect its territory macroeconomic indicators. Thirdly, the qualitative component of the generation depends on its numerical characteristics.

The research results are useful practically as they reflect strong interrelation between separate economical and educational factors. The understanding of investigated interrelations can help in the regulation of educational field providing successful development of economic system and its competitiveness increase.
