Abstract:
Education in 2026 is increasingly shaped by ubiquitous access to artificial intelligence and digital information, challenging long-standing assumptions about time-based instruction and assessment. Students now carry powerful technologies that enable instant access to information, support writing and analysis, and generate increasingly sophisticated responses to academic tasks. In this context, traditional measures of learning—such as seat time and the Carnegie unit—are becoming less aligned with how knowledge is acquired, applied, and evaluated.
Information has essentially become free in most cases. The cost of obtaining information has gone way down with the internet and the hardware that most people carry. The time it takes to find information has gone from days and hours looking through reference lists online and before in books to seconds using modern search engines. The personal energy to sort though all the information has been reduced to almost nothing with artificial intelligence. Finally the space in our lives for physical information has shrunk from rooms to something we can carry in our pockets as a smartphone. AI has made possible the sorting and delivery of information on an ongoing basis.
This paper explores the implications of AI for competency-based education and examines how higher education must adapt assessment practices to emphasize demonstrated skills rather than time spent in class. Particular attention is given to the changing role of memory, as external digital tools increasingly supplement factual recall, and to the growing importance of critical thinking, systems thinking, and the ability to synthesize information from diverse sources.
The paper also considers how evolving workforce demands are reshaping expectations for graduates, including the potential shift from traditional degrees toward certificates, badges, and other flexible credentials. Finally, the role of faculty is examined, highlighting the need for rapid adaptation, new assessment strategies, and ongoing engagement with emerging technologies. The paper argues that rethinking educational structures around competencies rather than time is essential for preparing students for an uncertain and rapidly changing future shaped by AI.Keywords:
