DEVELOPING XXI CENTURY LEARNING ABILITIES THROUGH ROBOTICS, A PROVEN SYSTEM

At the start of the XXI century, the set of abilities that student most develop had evolved. The traditional listen and read, passive student attitude and memorization process is not enough. Students need to be active, participative, they need to do, they need to actively analyze, synthesize, translate to everyday activities the concepts, information and knowledge that they are building through well define team activities, which are fun and allow all team members not only reinforce they knowledge but foster their creativity. All Activities are developed in a safe and challenging environment using building materials and robots. Using Robots as a tool to enhance the learning process and better prepare student for this century.
Elements from multiple disciplines are mixed and presented to the students in everyday situations. The system introduces students of each level with the right language and examples according to their age, to concepts of simple machines mainly: slope, wheel and axis, lever, pulley and gear. Using simple machines as pillars, concepts from mathematics, physics, geometry, mechanics, programming among others are presented and used by students to build replicas of everyday objects, like, blenders, clocks, drills, race car, wheelchair, crane, see saw, ferris wheel, air ride among others. Some of the principal characteristics of the pedagogical robotic system are: student hands-on doing and building, blended learning environment, foster creativity, order and discipline, team work, fun and regional, national and international competitions.
This work is an alternative, a pro-positive proposal to advance toward the new XXI century educational system. We elaborate on the new abilities needed for the XXI century. We describe three waves of innovation in the Mexican private school system in the last 25 years and argue that the time for the Robotics wave has come, not only for Mexico but for all Ibero-Latin America Countries. We present the characteristic of the pedagogical robotic system, including its blended learning environment, benefits and implementation. The paper concludes with a successful case implementation at a Primary school in Mexico.
