Abstract:
This study aimed to understand teachers' perceptions and readiness to apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning in higher education. Over 100 responses were collected from a survey during a series of AI seminars held between March and June 2023. Those seminars aim to familiarize college teachers with the latest AI tools and developments in the educational context. Hence, the findings are of great importance as they can help universities or policymakers answer questions about utilizing AI in teaching and learning in the higher education context.

The results showed that teachers had mixed feelings towards AI technology. While most perceived AI as a tool that could enhance their effectiveness, increase productivity, and promote human well-being, some felt uneasy when thinking about AI and considered it a threat to their future. However, the majority agreed that AI could help achieve the common good.

Regarding their readiness to teach AI, teachers expressed confidence in teaching the basic concepts of AI, introducing complex material, and supporting students' learning. They also expressed their intention to continue learning about AI, keeping themselves updated with the latest AI applications, and using AI to assist their teaching. Additionally, they perceived AI content to be useful in terms of learning the concept effectively. Finally, administration in their faculty/department/unit was one area where they sought assistance in applying AI in teaching.

In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into teachers' perceptions and readiness to apply AI in teaching and learning in higher education. The attitude of teachers towards AI is crucial in facilitating the adoption of AI in higher education and preparing students for the future. Therefore, the findings can be used to guide universities and policymakers in developing suitable policies and strategies that effectively integrate AI into the education system.
