Abstract:
"Froebel - Then, and Now" is a short film which provides an overview of the life and educational philosophy of the creator of "Kindergarten" and 19th century educationalist, Friedrich Froebel. Born in Germany in 1782, Froebel is regarded as one of the most influential and revolutionary figures in education. His child-centred approaches, with provision for hands-on, activity based learning are fundamental to curricular planning and implementation in many European and American teaching models. Following a brief examination of his early years and influences, this film focuses on Froebel's legacy in modern educational practice, with an emphasis on the Irish context. His belief that learning must involve wonder and joy is explored with reference to early childhood and junior school situations. Particular attention is paid to college programmes in Froebel College of Education, Dublin, and how his methods are realised in Primary schools here. The documentary concludes with an affirmation of the relevance of Froebel with regard to current educational trends, and the holistic and worthwhile contribution of Froebelian approaches in the lives of children today.
