Abstract:
In the current global environment, it is increasingly valuable for students to comprehend the significance of cultural diversity. In recent years, the number of study abroad and international students at US universities has seen a dramatic increase. Students now encounter diverse cultures both domestically and internationally. There is a pressing need for activities that facilitate American students' understanding and appreciation of globalization and cross-cultural differences.
In this research, we delineate the development and assessment of a learning activity wherein students systematically explore the characteristics of a new culture and compare them to their own. We analyze data from two conditions, encompassing pre- and post-project measures of cultural awareness and sensitivity, attitude changes, and post-project assessments of the activities employed in each condition.
The primary objective of the activity is to cultivate open attitudes towards other cultures and enhance participants' expertise about their own culture. Additionally, educators must provide learning experiences that mitigate cultural ignorance, stereotyping, and prejudice. We will scrutinize data, including pre- and post-project measures of cultural awareness and sensitivity, attitude changes, and post-project assessments of cultural sharing activities for both students and their international partners.
This research is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Cross-Cultural Sharing Project, constituting a scholarship of teaching and learning project. We aim to assess the impact of a class-based activity on altering students' attitudes and perceptions toward members of other cultures. The paper concludes with discussions on limitations and implications. Keywords:
