Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to design and develop a new model of class that is most appropriate for the age of SMART learning, complete with intelligent information technology and devices that support an optimal learning experience. To this end, this study identified and analyzed an exemplary case of such learning in Korea. The SMART Learning Class at W elementary School was observed for six months through survey, interviews, and in-class participation, and was analyzed in terms of changes observed in student behavior and characteristics, learning contents, and pedagogics. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the advanced, SMART model of learning proposed by this study requires a teacher familiar with SMART technology and devices. Second, the model also requires the development of new pedagogics that fit the new paradigm on education. Third, the class contents should be easily integrated into the daily lives of students so that students can stay engaged in learning. Fourth, the new model requires a horizontal culture of learning and interaction at school as well as support from school administrators. As for the policy support for establishing a new SMART learning environment, the development of an appropriate teaching staff training program, as well as other features of infrastructure capable of providing a customized learning experience for students, should be prioritized.
