Abstract:
The article deals with the English abbreviations often met in media texts used at the translation practice lessons with university students trained as translators and interpreters. The relevance of the research is defined by the dynamic development of the abbreviated vocabulary in modern English. New shortened words emerge so fast that they are not always registered in dictionaries, which causes certain problems in translator training. The aim of the paper is to study the structural peculiarities of the English abbreviations, including acronyms, used in media texts and techniques applicable in translating these vocabulary units into the Russian language. The study involved descriptive, continuous sampling method and method of structural analysis. The study revealed that the main techniques to convey the English abbreviations into Russian are transference of a foreign unit with the equivalent one, pure borrowing, translation of the full form of an acronym, transcription, transliteration and explanatory translation. The materials of the paper may be used in the practical courses of the English language, lexicology, theory and practice of translation.
