Abstract:
We perceive music biography as a broader category, which includes several aspects - musical-preferential framework (musical taste), functions of music, the qualities that the percipient attributes to the preferred music, the musical education and the musical activity of the percipient himself. The research study aims to examine the various components of music biography of Slovak teachers and educators. The research sample consists of 108 teachers and educators from Slovakia in the age range from 21 to 72 from all eight regions of Slovakia. The method of data collection were own measurement Basic Musical Biography Inventory – BMBI; modified Slovak version of Short Test of Music Preferences - STOMP (modified by Kusý & Vozafová, 2014); Brief Music Mood Regulation Scale - B-MMR (Saarikallio, 2012) and Use of Music Inventory - UMI (Chamorro-Premuzic & Furnham, 2007), which we used in Slovak translation. For data analysis, we used statistical methods such as simple statistical description, whereas the data were analyzed using the statistical software SPSS 25. The results suggest that Slovak teachers and educators prefer musical genres from the optimistic, conventional and intense, rebellious categories. Furthermore, it turns out that music has the function of entertainment, respectively it brings them strong sensation. Most of the listeners in our research sample appear to be emotional, which is probably related to the functionality of music in their lives. Our findings bring an opportunity to optimize teachers and educators training and to support them in the field of using music and art methods (eg in diagnostics, intervention, education, prevention, etc.).
