Abstract:
Modern technology can help to enrich teaching and learning processes and is therefore more and more used in universities over the last years. In line with this trend E-Assessment among others is a topic of growing importance for university education, since it can improve examinations in various aspects, for example a more realistic examination setting and the usage of multimedia to only name a few. E-Assessment, however, does not only improve examinations, but also poses new challenges to the universities, especially regarding IT infrastructure.

In order to avoid maintaining a potentially large computer room for carrying out E-Assessments and to let students use their familiar environments, a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) approach can be taken. This in turn introduces new aspects which have to be taken into account, when implementing BYOD for high stakes examinations. Thus there exist several ways of implementing BYOD approaches, depending on individual circumstances and needs, for example at Reykjavik University in Iceland where a bootable USB Stick with a Linux system is used or at Stellenbosch University in South Africa where a virtual desktop infrastructure is used.

This paper gives an overview about existing strategies of implementing BYOD approaches and compares them systematically regarding their benefits and disadvantages and identifies research questions to be tackled for implementing BYOD E-Assessments for computer science.
