Abstract:
In this paper, a framework for developing socially responsible future business leaders at a historically Black and Catholic university is discussed. The framework is based on the mission of the business program which is to develop tomorrow’s socially responsible business leaders. The framework also supports the university mission which is to develop students as servant leaders who will then go on to contribute to the promotion for a more just and humane society. Critical success factors are identified for developing socially responsible leaders and these are: a strong business curriculum that emphasizes analytical and quantitative skills; a core curriculum that enhances critical thinking and communication skills; a set of core values (integrity, community, academic honesty, responsibility, and engagement) that are stressed throughout the business program; equity and social justice awareness through coursework in philosophy and theology; soft-skills development; and student placement. The recent social unrest in many parts of the United States and the pandemic has highlighted the issues of equality and social justice across the country and clearly corporate America so far has not addressed these issues in an effective manner. Now, many corporations are attempting to address the issues of diversity and inclusion in their companies at all levels. The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) 2020 survey does not include equity and social justice awareness as attributes that employers are looking for in business graduates. Given the current focus of corporations on these issues, equity and social justice awareness may become more important for employers. The business program at Xavier University of Louisiana has always taken a holistic approach to student development and equity and social justice awareness have always been at the forefront.
