THE EDUCATION IN GEOMATICS: DESIRABILITY OF VIRTUAL FORMAT

Abstract:
The education in Surveying (Geomatics), including Remote Sensing, Digital Photogrammetry, GIS, LIDAR technology, tends to increase because of widely application in many areas, such as compilation of topographic maps, terrain mapping from aerial photographs or satellite imagery, orthophoto maps generation, spatial data modelling, solving engineering tasks at the construction sites, fixing situation of architectural heritage objects, cadastral data base creation, objects classification under the user’s needs, etc. Highly unexpected extreme situations due to the pandemic or imposed state of extremity requires searching the possibilities for effective education trends, getting comprehensive knowledge in application of the up-to-date mapping technologies, finding the best solution for feedback. There is outlined the distance educational aspects, developed at the Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering, turning to the virtual format. The searches of best solutions learning on-line are based on laying out the fundamentals for the education in Geomatics subjects, including the preparation of study module (the guide) with outlined suitable content studying at extreme situation above mentioned. The technical tools suitable for virtual presentation (Microsoft Teams, Web Zoom, Moodle), software (e.g., GeoMap, 3D Reshaper-TLS, Pix4Dmapper, Didactic Digital Photogrammetric WorkStation) with different application and data sources for practical training in images processing techniques generating the mapping products, 3D surface modelling is described. The presentation of theoretical part of subjects are turned to modify from traditional (e.g., slides show) to solving some specialized individual tasks at interactive mode. The proper evaluation method of knowledge (achievements) is presented. The recommendations include the possibilities of a usage the virtual environment for education of modern mapping technologies and on-line application of different softcopies in appropriate training processes.
