Abstract:
This paper deals with the results of a survey on student's experience with a part-time master program electrical engineering. The aim is to define a valid blue print for additional part-time master programmes.

Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences established a part-time master program electrical engineering in 2007 and runs it ever since. It is open to traditional and non-traditional engineering students. Its blended-learning concept aims at a design that motivates students and lecturers alike to integrate new ideas on top of a state of the arts curriculum. In the summer term of 2016 a survey with about 200 enrolled students, from freshmen to graduating students was carried out. A questionnaire on student's experiences with the programme was developed and filled in online by the students.

The survey included three main topics:
The reception of (a), the didactical concept of the part-time master program by the students, (b), the aspect of workload as well as (c), compatibility of work, study and family from student's side was investigated in. Design and framework of the questionnaire were developed according to quality criteria and methods of empirical social research and intersubjectively validated, using various collaborative methods.

The instructional design of this successful programme is rather generic and well-adjusted to the requirements of technical academic programs. It is used for a bachelor’s course of a partner Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences and will be applied in the development of two additional courses in economics and engineering, publicly-funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research under the initiative “Upward Mobility through Academic Training: Open Universities”.

The results of the survey will be presented and its scientific base and practical relevance discussed. They were scrutinized with respect to the target groups: traditional and non-traditional students. A draft of a feasible blueprint for a part-time master program is offered.
