Abstract:
Many sociological, economic, legal, ideological and creative conditions influence the process of shaping the residential interior. The most important of them, taken into account by the designer should be social issues - number, age and physical fitness as well as aesthetic preferences and interests of future tenants, as a satisfying place for living is a guarantee of meeting basic human needs. Effective programming of the housing space and creating its aesthetics should be the architect's basic skill. Therefore students of Interior Design are obliged to carry out such a task as soon as the second semester of the Bachelor degree study, according the students’ curriculum at the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology.

The project task is preceded by a research task carried out in the first semester during classes in Design Methodology, conducted by the author of the paper - a detailed analysis of the selected residential premises. Students, working in groups, using selected techniques and research tools for qualitative research methods (Post Occupancy Evaluation, Housing Enabler, Building Performance Evaluation etc.), assess the functional, technical, aesthetic and behavioral quality of multi-family housing. Thanks to the conducted analyzes, they have an insight into real problems and real needs of users, which is helpful in the subsequent shaping of the model living space.

The next research task, supporting the project task included in the study curriculum, were free and in-depth interviews, which students were obliged to carry out with members of their own family, to find out what housing conditions prevailed in previous decades and how the housing culture changed in subsequent generations. The results were presented in a random way: graphic - using diagrams, photos, sketches, illustrations or in a descriptive way, in the form of a report or an essay.

The obtained research material is an excellent source of information on the ways of living in both: past decades and now. It allows to make comparisons, correlations and typological statements. It is both - the didactic exercise and research work. The research tasks carried out are not only a source of data, but also a perfect exercising field for young adepts of design art and the occasion of learning about many interesting facts about their own family and details of their own immediate surroundings, which they had not been interested in before.
