Abstract:
While there are many different language proficiency tests and any imaginable way of preparation for them, receiving feedback after the actual test performance, apart from assessment marks, is scarce. However, feedback is considered one of the most important language learning tools. Providing detailed feedback after a failed attempt might support and encourage candidates in their following preparation in order to succeed at high stakes proficiency language exams. This paper aims to offer an insight into the effectiveness of providing feedback to unsuccessful candidates of high stakes English language proficiency tests analyzing candidates’ performance in the writing part of the standardized military language exam. The authors of this paper analyzed samples of unsuccessful candidates’ writing and provided comprehensive oral feedback to those candidates. Their subsequent writing test performance was analyzed, and the quantitative and qualitative aspects of feedback effectiveness were measured using the data gathered at the actual exam and through questionnaires which the candidates filled immediately after their re-examination attempts. Based on the research results, the paper draws conclusions to enhance future learning and teaching as well as to design standardized methods of providing writing exam feedback to increase the efficiency and success rate at the exam. Keywords:
