Abstract:
Paper deals with description of broadband access state in Slovak Republic. It includes and defines basic terms from the field of electronic communications related to broadband access and its characteristics. It describes communication infrastructure for broadband access, new broadband technologies such as optical networks, FTTH, VDSL 2 technologies, 10G GPON technology as well as satellite access and mobile networks.

Broadband access is an important factor of knowledge-economics and society progress. But it also means a real menace of social differences increasing, on the other hand. In the paper there is a state evaluation of broadband access in Slovak Republic compared to the state in the European Union. The existence of high-speed internet not limiting the user becomes a need recently and the count of broadband user connections worldwide grows every day.

The trend of increasing the amount of broadband internet access users dominates in Slovakia as well as in other European Union countries; in July 2010, the number of Slovak users became 923294. The most used technology of broadband network connection in Slovakia is the xDSL technology, with the amount of 46 % in the year 2010. The aim of this paper is to clarify the term broadband access, evaluate its state in the Slovak republic and thus to help to increase the interest in its using. This can lead to the Slovak republic position improvement and approach towards to the world standard.
