Abstract:
This paper focuses on the experiences of Slovak parents raising their children abroad while striving to maintain active use of the Slovak language. Based on qualitative research conducted through interviews and observations of families living in Belgium, Spain, and Ireland, We analyze the strategies, motivations, and challenges involved in fostering Slovak in a multilingual environment. The children from these families were also enrolled in a Slovak primary school, where they participated in regular language assessments. This contact with the Slovak school environment supported the development of their language skills and provided parents with opportunities to consult with Slovak language teachers, discuss teaching strategies, and access supportive materials for home-based language education. The paper highlights practical ways in which parents can maintain their mother tongue abroad and the emotional dimension of preserving their linguistic and cultural heritage.
