Abstract:
Slovak language is not only used in the Slovak Republic but also in many other countries where Slovak nationals emigrated during various periods in history. It is these nationals who in the recent years expressed a need for intensive methodology support in teaching the language to children of Slovaks living abroad. Issues concerning teaching the Slovak language in other countries of the world do not only focus on formal use of the language and the practical application of the language in contact with family relatives. It is through the language that cultural values are shared and national awareness is built. Results of research studies conducted by University of Matej Bel in Banska Bystrica almost consistently since 2011 up to this date identify the state and the needs of the children, the parents and of the educational centres and schools for children of Slovaks living abroad. Main issue is lack of good quality didactic curriculum material available, the volume of the actual curriculum and the amount of time available to learners. A team of authors from the Pedagogical Faculty at University of Matej Bel in Banska Bystrica – Prof. Alena Douskova, Doc. Simoneta Babiakova, Dr. Zuzana Kovacova, Dr. Ruzena Ciliakova – created special teaching materials which take into account the requirements of the centres and schools. The fundamental part of these materials is dedicated fairy tales which teach children about the country of their ancestors as well as allowing them to practise the language.
