Abstract:
Almost all students have smartphones with powerful cameras and good processing power, which enables teachers to develop new experimental approaches. The main objective of this study was to approach the scientific method of colorimetry in chemistry and the Beer-Lambert law using digital tools such as smartphones. During this laboratory exercise, the students prepared three solutions with different confectionery coloring contents. With a white background and using a mobile phone with software installed to measure color using the HSV model, they recorded the H value . Using these measurements, they created graphs of the Hue (H) color parameter against the number of drops per 100 mL. The result was a straight line that essentially confirmed the principle of the method based on the Beer-Lambert law. The last measurement was performed on a solution of unknown concentration. Using the reference curve they had created, the groups were able to accurately determine the concentration of the unknown solution. Throughout this laboratory activity, the students prepared solutions, measured specific parameters, used software and smartphones as scientific tools, created graphs, analyzed results, and reached scientific conclusions.
